U.S. market indexes were lower Tuesday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 24,754.75 for a loss of -37.45 points or -0.15%. The S&P 500 Index closed at 2,681.47 for a loss of -8.69 points or -0.32%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,963.85 for a loss of -30.91 points or -0.44%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 9.96 for a gain of 0.43 points or 4.51%.

Tuesday's market movers

Stocks retreated slightly from all-time highs on Monday. The House of Representatives passed the tax reform bill, leaving the final vote for the Senate and President Trump.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • Housing starts increased to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.297 million.
  • The National Current Account report showed a deficit of -$100.6 billion, improving from $-124.4 billion.

In the broad market, real estate and utilities stocks led losses. Technology was also lower with the S&P 500 technology sector reporting a loss of -0.61%.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1,536.75 for a loss of -12.17 points or -0.79%. The S&P 600 Index closed at 936.62 for a loss of -8.50 points or -0.90%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 9,403.14 for a loss of -57.43 points or -0.61%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 10,238.82 for a loss of -81.63 points or -0.79%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,897.03 for a loss of -8.27 points or -0.43%; the S&P 100 Index at 1,188.29 for a loss of -3.93 points or -0.33%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1,586.16 for a loss of -5.80 points or -0.36%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1,485.15 for a loss of -4.91 points or -0.33%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 704.83 for a loss of -4.19 points or -0.59%.
